How to Talk it Through After a Conflict:
The Aftermath Demo

Testimonial from 2019 attendee-
"Shannon's Aftermath class was a great way for my partner and I to see the Gottman tools in action. We saw the pitfalls we make in our own reconciliation attempts, and walked away with material to work on for our next "regrettable incident." Highly relevant, informative, and despite being a workshop on disagreements, non-confrontational and supportive!"

The Aftermath (of a Fight or Regrettable Incident) is a science informed tool gathered from actual couples researched over time who happily stay together over the years navigating their fights and conflicts with several key love habits-this way of talking through it being one of them.

Attendees determine your own level of interaction in this demonstration with a real couple coached on one of their real conflicts in the 5 step Aftermath process.

This demo/workshop can be done in 2 hours and is led by Shannon Batts, M.S., Licensed Professional Counselor (OR C2379), drawing on her 20+ years specializing in repair for couples, and her training in Gottman Methods, including as it applies to recovery and betrayals/affairs/broken trust. Her own marriage of 23+ years is made possible by keeping up with the savvy habits learned from the research.

Surviving parenting a teenager has also taught her how the Aftermath makes sense for repairing conflicts wherever they pop up in family or friendships, not just for marriages. (Psssst-parenting tip-don't wait till they're teens or they may grow parent repellant and not have the patience).

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN AFTERMATH DEMO?
  • Attendees will hear a brief summary of marriage research findings, to gain understanding as to how and when the Aftermath is used.
  • The demo couple will introduce which conflict, fight or regrettable incident they will be talking through.
  • Shannon will lead them step by step through all 5 steps: Feelings, Realities, Triggers, Taking Responsibility, and Problem Solving.
  • The observers will be encouraged to ask questions of the process along the way.
  • All the how-to information will be provided in a handout to go so as to be able to DIY at home.
Prerequisite for using this tool is that both people are calm when using it and can soothe themselves when sensing that adrenaling is rising (in Gottman terms, using the "Flood Plan.")

You can learn more about this on your own if you prefer, or purchase your own Aftermath Booklet (without Shannon's added notations) at the Gottman Institute, AKA The Relationship Research Institute, or find it in any of the many popular Gottman books packed with the relationship research findings.

Contact Shannon Batts 503-348-0405 to inquire or to arrange for your own community or use the form below.  This workshop is currently offered monthly. You can register for your first one, then you're welcome to register and attend additional workshops as desired. Maybe you will volunteer as the demo couple!

MORE QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Q: Why do you do this?
The Aftermath brings you close and keeps informing your partner and yourself how to move through your lives better. Since my mission is to deliver the goods to make your marriage rock, Baby, and have fun too, I wanted to spring it free from just the therapy session out into the world so more people can be more connected and supported after a conflict.

Q: When?
There is a 2 hour demo every month on the reserved date as long as a minimum of 4 couples, and one being the demo couple are signed up.

Q: Does insurance pay for this?
No, this is a workshop, not treatment for a mental health diagnosis which is required for insurance use.

Q: Cost of the Aftermath Demo?
$40 per couple includes the take home Aftermath 5 step instructions notated by Shannon for easier DIY success.

Q: Can I make a donation to help your work with others?
Generous donations welcome and are used to subsidize coaching for the unhoused, unemployed, transgender, intersectional clients, and others for whom help is out of reach because of their economic hardship.

Q: What payment forms?
Payment can be done by Visa/MasterCard (via Square), Paypal, or cash.

 Q: Where do we meet?
Portland location details are emailed to registrants.

Q: Can I get an Aftermath Demo at my house party, workplace, church community, affinity group, or for a premarriage wedding present , or anniversary present to upgrade all my friends' skills too?
OF COURSE!!!  You can be an instigator of creating stronger relationships all around you. You could have this at your venue, group, or community too! For example, this has been done with lots of laughs at an NA Recovery House Party.  This has also been done with an intentional community with many big aha moments! Upgrading your skills can be fun!
